Estonia ranks fifth in the global cybersecurity index
According to the recent global cybersecurity index of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Estonia is ranked fifth in the world.
The ranking is shared with Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, Germany and the UK. The US is ranked first and Canada second.

The TUT department of Architecture & Urban Design opens the new 2-year master’s programme in European Architecture to start in September 2015. Estonian animation wins Grand Prix at the Holland Animation Film Festival
“House of Unconsciousness”, an Estonian animation about “the dreams of chimney sweepers”, has won a Grand Prize at the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF).
The animation, directed by Priit Tender, is a psychedelic drama about a chimney sweeper and a burning woman. The film is apparently based on a long-term study of the dreams that chimney sweepers encounter most frequently.

University of Tartu open access courses attract participants from over 70 countries
Ever since the University of Tartu started offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in 2014, Estonian higher education has reached learners in more than 70 countries worldwide.
The MOOC “Estimation of Measurement Uncertainty in Chemical Analysis” that started last week has 450 participants from 70 countries, the most exotic of which might be Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Jordan, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The course, led by Professor of Chemistry Ivo Leito, is in English and takes place for the second time. When it ran for the first time in 2014, it draw 270 participants from 40 countries.

International students satisfied with quality of education in Estonia
The International Student Barometer (IBS) has found that 89 percent of international students at Estonian universities are satisfied with the quality of education on offer, but find career guidance lacking.
IBS is the global benchmark study for the international student experience, in which Estonia took part for the third time. In the academic year 2014-2015, 2,887 foreign students, plus 1,000 exchange students, were enrolled in Estonian universities. The sample of the survey was 1,035 international students in Estonia.

Institutional evaluation - Tallinn University and The Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences were given the EKKA quality mark
The international commissions of accreditation visited Tallinn University and the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences Mainor. Based on the evaluation commissions’ reports, the EKKA Quality Assessment Council decided on 9 June to accredit both, Tallinn University and the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences Mainor for seven years. Both higher education schools were given the EKKA quality mark.

The interest of foreign students towards the University of Tartu has increased nearly by half
The admission of student candidates to English-language curricula in the University of Tartu has concluded. The interest of international student candidates in studies in the University of Tartu has increased by more than 45% in comparison with the previous year. The greatest interest was in the master’s programme of software engineering for which 332 applications were submitted.

Energy and resources savings contest NEGAVATT with 45 000 EUR prize fund awaits students applications
Foundation Environmental Investments Centre has announced the start of Negavatt, a contest targeted at university students. The objective of the contest is to raise the level of awareness regarding energy and resources and to motivate students to come up with solutions that their universities could use for saving resources. The total prize fund of the contest is EUR 45,000, accompanied by consultations with mentors for developing the ideas, and help in finding partners.

MEKTORY INNOVATION CENTER IS NOW OPEN
Tallinn University of Technology opened its innovation and entrepreurship center Mektory last week. The center has already been operating for more than a year, with over 15 product development projects under its belt as well as its first contracts with major companies. Mektory’s now-completed 4,450-square-meter building houses a number of labs ranging from mobile services to welding, as well as a demo center, an youth exhibition center, and workshops dedicated to China, Japan, Australia and the US.

EBS AND NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY START A JOINT DEGREE PROGRAMME
On January 10th Estonian Business School rector Professor Arno Almann signed a contract according to which EBS will open a joint dergee Master programme with Nottingham Trent University Business School in autumn 2013. The degree programme is called European Business and Finance.

Estonian Academy of Arts professor won Henkel Art Award 2012
Marge Monko, the photography assistant professor from the Estonian Academy of Arts won the Henkel Art.Award 2012. For the 11th time, Henkel Central Eastern Europe (CEE) is bestowing the award for Eastern Europe, featuring a monetary prize of 7,000 euros and two individual exhibitions. For the first time the award is given to an Estonian artist.

Baltic Film and Media School has a new home for the students!
Tallinn University opened the new Nova building which is now for almost one month a home for Baltic Film and Media School (BFM). The school is one of the most international section of the university and now all BFM students can study in the city centre in the Tallinn University campus.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SAY ESTONIA IS THE BEST COUNTRY FOR STAY
Estonia ranked 1st in the ESN Survey 2010 regarding the average satisfaction level for stay in the hosting country institution. ESN Survey is one of the biggest international student surveys in Europe and it received answers from more than 8400 students who had studied at least one semester abroad.
