According to Director of Administration Kstina Vallimäe, the university’s former web page was outdated and failed to meet users’ expectations. “It is important for the University of Tartu to respond to the needs of the changing world, and this is why we aim to develop an inspiring and pioneering organisational culture. The university’s website is one of the most important tools for creating our image. Its new fresh visual design will better highlight our learning opportunities, research achievements, developments, values and contribution to society,” said Vallimäe.

We have great news for EU citizens! Starting from this admission year, citizens of the EU countries are exempt from tuition fees for their studies.

On December 20, TalTech, Telia and Ericsson opened the first 5G coverage area of Estonia at the campus. With the 5G network, TalTech has opened the test campus, which can be successfully used by students, researchers and businesses. With the 5G network created by TalTech, Estonia could become a safe 5G competence center, for which the university is already working closely with the government, the private sector and other interested parties to create a 5G road map.

Work in Estonia (www.workinestonia.com), launched today by Enterprise Estonia (EAS), a government agency, aims to encourage foreign experts to relocate to Estonia.

The goal of Work in Estonia is to simplify the process for local companies to employ overseas specialists and to introduce Estonia as the perfect destination for fulfilling one’s potential.

According to the recent global cybersecurity index of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Estonia is ranked fifth in the world.

The ranking is shared with Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, Germany and the UK. The US is ranked first and Canada second.

The TUT department of Architecture & Urban Design opens the new 2-year master’s programme in European Architecture to start in September 2015. The programme offers research-oriented workshop-studies at 6 universities in greater Europe, in cooperation with the Aalto Foundation and Bauhaus Dessau. The qualification is a double degree (M.Sc) together with Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa.

“House of Unconsciousness”, an Estonian animation about “the dreams of chimney sweepers”, has won a Grand Prize at the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF).

The animation, directed by Priit Tender, is a psychedelic drama about a chimney sweeper and a burning woman. The film is apparently based on a long-term study of the dreams that chimney sweepers encounter most frequently.

Ever since the University of Tartu started offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in 2014, Estonian higher education has reached learners in more than 70 countries worldwide.

The MOOC “Estimation of Measurement Uncertainty in Chemical Analysis” that started last week has 450 participants from 70 countries, the most exotic of which might be Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Jordan, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The course, led by Professor of Chemistry Ivo Leito, is in English and takes place for the second time. When it ran for the first time in 2014, it draw 270 participants from 40 countries.

The International Student Barometer (IBS) has found that 89 percent of international students at Estonian universities are satisfied with the quality of education on offer, but find career guidance lacking.

IBS is the global benchmark study for the international student experience, in which Estonia took part for the third time. In the academic year 2014-2015, 2,887 foreign students, plus 1,000 exchange students, were enrolled in Estonian universities. The sample of the survey was 1,035 international students in Estonia.

Seven Estonian higher education institutions in cooperations with Archimedes Foundation are introducing this week their programmes, application conditions and scholarships in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The second edition of the Global Talent Competitiveness Index, created by INSEAD, in partnership with Singapore’s Human Capital Leadership Institute and Adecco, placed Estonia 19th in the index, just ahead of Japan and right after Belgium.

Everybody is invited to participate in massive open online courses (MOOCs) offered by the University of Tartu free of charge. Estonian universities are accepting applications from international students to study in Estonia for 2015/2016 academic year. Some universities started accepting applications already in December 2014, however starting from January 2015 most Estonian universities are accepting application documents for next year.

The members of the Estonian Convention Bureau ECB) elected the Annual Convention Event of 2014, the 37th Annual Congress of the European Accounting Association (EAA) and a Doctoral Colloquium which was jointly organised by Tartu University and EBS, and visited by over 1,200 delegates in Tartu and Tallinn at the end of May 2014.

Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu is going to open a new field of study of IT Law in English for MA students in order to ensure training of highly qualified law specialists in IT field. Formation of this field of study has also been recognized with the “Idea of the Year” title by Estonian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

The international commissions of accreditation visited Tallinn University and the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences Mainor. Based on the evaluation commissions’ reports, the EKKA Quality Assessment Council decided on 9 June to accredit both, Tallinn University and the Estonian Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences Mainor for seven years. Both higher education schools were given the EKKA quality mark.

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) offers 2 stipends for the potential students from the UKRAINE on a 2-year fully English-taught tuition free Master’s Programme in E-governance. The stipend is 400 euros per month for the total of 17 months period during the studies to cover living expenses of the student in Tallinn.

The admission of student candidates to English-language curricula in the University of Tartu has concluded. The interest of international student candidates in studies in the University of Tartu has increased by more than 45% in comparison with the previous year. The greatest interest was in the master’s programme of software engineering for which 332 applications were submitted.

Estonian initiative called the IT Academy is supporting the participation of group of Estonian IT students (both local and international) in the 2014 European Innovation Academy (EIA) technology entrepreneurship program. The programme is taking place on 7-25th July in Sophia-Antipolis, France.

On May 14, Tallinn University (TU) will hold an Open Doors Day in Helsinki to introduce the opportunities to study in Tallinn, and also in Helsinki. Foundation Environmental Investments Centre has announced the start of Negavatt, a contest targeted at university students. The objective of the contest is to raise the level of awareness regarding energy and resources and to motivate students to come up with solutions that their universities could use for saving resources. The total prize fund of the contest is EUR 45,000, accompanied by consultations with mentors for developing the ideas, and help in finding partners.

Estonian Business School that celebrated its 25th anniversary on the 7th December has during 25 years provided business education to over 4000 people from Estonia and elsewhere. EBS is among the Top 300 business schools in the world, according to Eduniversal ranking, EBS Alumni are most successful on Estonian labour market and EBS is at the moment only private university acting in Estonia as well as in Finland. Estonian Business School celebrated its anniversary on 7th December in Estonian Concert Hall with grandiose concert and reception where over 400 guests took part.

For the first time, as a new project, Study in Estonia brought together foreign students studying in Estonian universities and employers for the INTERNATIONAL STUDENT JOB DAY. Tallinn University of Technology opened its innovation and entrepreurship center Mektory last week. The center has already been operating for more than a year, with over 15 product development projects under its belt as well as its first contracts with major companies. Mektory’s now-completed 4,450-square-meter building houses a number of labs ranging from mobile services to welding, as well as a demo center, an youth exhibition center, and workshops dedicated to China, Japan, Australia and the US.

A doctoral student from China, Zhihong Sun defended her PhD thesis „Isoprene emission from aspen (Populus sp.) in relation to environmental drivers“ at Estonian University of Life Sciences last week. Her research will help creating more accurate climate change models in the future.

Marge Monko, the photography assistant professor from the Estonian Academy of Arts won the Henkel Art.Award 2012. For the 11th time, Henkel Central Eastern Europe (CEE) is bestowing the award for Eastern Europe, featuring a monetary prize of 7,000 euros and two individual exhibitions. For the first time the award is given to an Estonian artist.

Tallinn University opened the new Nova building which is now for almost one month a home for Baltic Film and Media School (BFM). The school is one of the most international section of the university and now all BFM students can study in the city centre in the Tallinn University campus.

Freedom House’s recent survey says Estonia has the greatest internet freedom in the world – and already for the 3rd time in a row.

Tallinn University of Technology issued on its 94th birthday a doctoral degree to 63 students, anointed 2 deans and bestowed its highest award, the Mente et Manu, on three individuals.

Estonia ranked 1st in the ESN Survey 2010 regarding the average satisfaction level for stay in the hosting country institution. ESN Survey is one of the biggest international student surveys in Europe and it received answers from more than 8400 students who had studied at least one semester abroad.
