Overview
The main goal of the study programme is to create conditions for achieving professionalism in the field of audiovisual arts and media studies and for doing independent research and creative work at an internationally recognised level, including:
- to support research-oriented doctoral students in conducting independent doctoral research in contemporary media and communication culture studies, primarily in the fields of digital and audiovisual media, and in developing the necessary skills and knowledge to a high level;
- to support the realisation of creativity-based media and film projects as a practical doctoral research and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to a higl level;
An additional objective is to support the students preparation for careers in teaching and conducting research by developing the necessary pedagogical and research organisation competences.
The study programme has a two-pronged design – the study programme must enable traditional research-based education as well as creative doctoral programme. The central idea behind the creative doctoral thesis is that creative work is also a research-based study and/or experiment, only one accomplished using different means and modalities. In the context of this study programme, the research is carried out and/or reflected using different (above all, audiovisual) representative media, not written argumentation. This means that a work of audiovisual creative research involves mainly three types of research: 1) research concerning the form of audiovisual communication – for example, experimental studies of audiovisual narration techniques are conducted on virtual reality platforms; 2) the possible ways of representation and interpretation of the environment/society/culture and their various cultural or artistic effects are studied in an audiovisual manner; the possibility of reflecting the phenomena studied is employed in a different, and sometimes more effective manner; 3) the processes and methods of the creative work are studied. In all cases, all doctoral theses in this study programme must include the aspect of research and inquiry.
In addition, taking into account the wide disciplinary range of media and communication studies, we are planning for the study programme to be diverse as regards disciplinary approaches. At the same time, taking into consideration the strengths of the BFM and Tallinn University curriculum places a separate emphasis on the topics of audiovisual culture and contemporary digital culture and to approach these above all from humanities perspectives, while promoting interdisciplinary dialogue with other approaches, in particular economic approaches to media and the audiovisual sector. The role of the contemporary media in teaching and learning and issues involving the media and audiovisual culture literacy and didactics will also receive significant attention.
