Margit Võsa, admission secretary of EAMT.
Entrance examination requirements for jazz music applicants (Master Studies).
The applicant must present a programme of 20 – 30 min in duration, which should include at least two original compositions or arrangements. (The EAMT cannot guarantee the presence of a jazz ensemble for accompaniment).
Generally we do not require advance notice of your audition programme. You should do that only if you need an accompanist from EAMT for your audition.
The examination panel can give you additional assignments to determine your skills and abilities. For instance, depending on your main subject, you may be asked to play some scales or arpeggios, to undertake a short sight-reading exercise, to improvise or create a short composition on a given theme, etc. During an interview, the examination panel can test a candidate’s knowledge in a narrower field of specialisation, as well as his or her general cultural knowledge. The examination panel verifies whether your English language skills are sufficient to be admitted to EAMT (you should demonstrate an ability to communicate orally, pass a short written test and know musical terms in English).
The examination panel evaluates and considers the following:persuasiveness and originality of artistic and/or research ideas of a candidate; performance logic and fluency of performance, ability to express the emotional content of works and impressiveness of interpretation (in case of performers); originality, artistic persuasiveness and technical execution in case of creative submissions (composers); defined focus of the research paper, systematic nature and exhaustiveness of research, the reference literature use, as well as accuracy of language and formatting (in musicology); specialty-specific level of technical mastery; general cultural and subject-specific knowledge of a candidate.
The examination is graded on a scale of 0−5. Candidates receiving at least 3 points will be admitted to EAMT.
A Master’s Degree generally takes 2 years to complete.
A student candidate may apply for studies in up to two main subjects (majors). If a candidate meets the admission criteria in both main subjects, the candidate shall notify the Secretary of Admission of his or her preference by the end of the admission period at the latest. Student candidates shall not be enrolled simultaneously in two main subjects.
Curricula with English as the study language shall be subject to a tuition fee according to the rates established by the EAMT Council.

The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre promotes open education and an international study environment. Young talented people, who meet the required standards, are always welcome to study at the EAMT. The number of international students at our Academy has increased rapidly in recent years: out of a total of approximately 700 students about 120 are from other countries than Estonia. Although the main language of instruction at EAMT is Estonian, most of the musical principal subjects as well as cultural management can also be studied in English.
Entrance auditions for bachelor and master’s levels are held from April to June. You can choose between 3 audition dates:18−20 April 7−9 May 27−28 June
The audition/interview (entrance examination) lasts approximately 20−30 minutes. The examination panel will assess your musical skills and potential as well as your English language proficiency. For detailed audition requirements and assessment criteria click on the relevant study programme level in the boxes on the right of this page.
When you travel to Tallinn for your entrance auditions, you can also become acquainted with our facilities, meet staff members, observe open classes etc. If you are in doubt as to whether your musical skills meet the required standards, you may send us a video recording of your performance or portfolio of your compositions. If you do this at least 5 weeks before the audition date you are entitled to receive feedback from us concerning your level of proficency and whether we recommend that you come to Tallinn for the audition in person.
EAMT always prefers you to audition in person, but international applicants are allowed to submit an original video recording of their performance as a substitute for a live audition. You can only pass the entrance audition by video recording if the examination panel has no doubts about the authenticity of the recording, the quality of the recording is sufficient for the evaluation and your performance meets the highest standards.
Please note that you should agree upon your specific audition date and time with our admission secretary (email@example.com, +372 6675 709) no later than 3 weeks before the audition. In other words, if you have decided to participate in the auditions 18−20 April, you should contact the admission secretary no later 28 March; for May auditions the registration deadline is the 16 April and for June auditions by 4 June. If you are not able to come to Tallinn for the audition in person and wish to audition by recording, the same deadlines apply for sending your recording to the admission secretary. The admission secretary will also assist you if you wish to make an appointment with our staff members, receive a subject-specific consultation or have any questions about the admission procedures.
Before travelling to Tallinn for the entrance auditions, you need to submit a formal application together with relevant documents. The electronic application form and the list of required documents can be found here. The application deadlines for the auditions are 28 March, 16 April and the final deadline 4 June 2017 (documents certifying completion of the previous educational level may be submitted later).
In most cases you will receive the examination result on the day of your audition. In other words, you will be informed whether you have been accepted into the programme you applied for or not. If the answer is positive, you need to confirm your decision to study at EAMT as soon as possible, but not later than 21 August. The 2018/2019 academic year starts on August 27. Please note that to formally enrol you need to have submitted all the required documents, including proof of previous qualifications and received diplomas.
The application fee is EUR 50 and normally needs to be paid by bank transfer. Tuition fees apply to all international students whose language of tuition is English. The fees range from EUR 600 to EUR 6000 per year depending on the study programme and your country of origin (EU or non-EU). Detailed information about the fees can be found here. A limited number of scholarships are available for international students. Auditions for the scholarships usually take place at the end of September. There is no tuition fee for doctoral studies.
